"Fundamentals of Ethical Decision Making"

MABUHAY PAIDE members and associates!

The economy here is USA seems to be improving, and hopefully that will allow me the opportunity (and the funds) to be able to make a trip this coming year to see all of you and perhaps have a workshop or two.  But in the meantime, I am still landlocked in the USA and we’ll just have to make do, with a virtual/written workshop here in the newsletter.

I've recently finished an in depth ethics course in relation to my current studies towards my Legal Certification, one of the highest ratings and Interpreter can achieve from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID).  There are currently only 264 SC:L (Specialist Certificate: Legal) in the United States, and only 7 in my state of Arizona.  I aspire to be among the few!

"PROFESSIONALISM AND INTERPRETING"

Let us examine the meaning of professionalism as it relates to the interpreter. Just as there are workers who use a hammer and nail bits of wood into something useful and are not professional carpenters, there are workers who provide sign language interpreting services who are not professionals in the sense we mean here. So, how does a professional Sign Language Interpreter differ from a non-professional service provider?

I cannot stress enough about the essentiality of ethical behavior to professionalism. Ethics are the very foundation upon which a professional career is built and maintained. Professional interpreters must uphold and follow a professional Code of Ethics (COE), in the case of Sign Interpreters in Manila, your PAIDE code of Ethics should be your guide (PAIDECARESMUCH). It has been my experience that many working interpreting service providers do not adhere to the COE. Interpreters who have not taken the time to learn and internalize the COE, or do not conduct themselves according to its tenets, are not professionals.

"WHAT CAUSES CONFLICTS?"

Greetings again,

Please accept my apologies for missing the last newsletter deadline. Life happens, and it seems to happen all at once!

But I am here now and what a time it's been! I continue to grow as an interpreter as I hope all of you as well! The family is doing well and we are prospering. I just passed my 41st birthday and can feel the gray hairs popping out of my scalp! I guess I shouldn't complain about getting older...it's a lot better than the alternative!!

I want to spend a little time this issue talking about resolving conflicts as interpreters.

What causes conflicts? Uncommunicated expectations.

Working with other interpreters, we may have a different expectations towards a job, a training or a situation than do other interpreters. The reason is simple...yet complex. Why the different expectations? We all have different mothers! That's about it my friends, we learned how to deal with conflict and resolutions from our family as we grew up.

"TAKING CARE OF OURSELVES"

Hello RIDE members!

Please accept my Holiday greetings and Happy New Year wishes to all of you from me and my family!

I had a 4 day whirlwind trip to Manila recently in November. I sure wish I had the time to meet all of you for a short session, but this trip was for family business, and alas, was unable to squeeze the time. I did enjoy a chance to visit with Sir Jun, Letty Uy and Michael Potian. I did some holiday shopping, visited several Malls, including SM Bicutan and Divisoria Mall. We also went to “The Fort” where we were fortunate enough to have a couple of celebrity sightings. We saw Gelli de Belen doing a bit of Christmas shopping with us at the craft booths as well as action star Raymart Santiago heading into a restaurant assumingly for a bite to eat.

"THE CODE OF ETHICS OUTLINED"

Hello mag-anak ko, it seems like forever since I've written!

I truly enjoyed my last visit to Manila . Ma'am Letty gave me and my wife, Rose the grand tour of both the Angeli Dei Schools and the Angels Institute of Learning. We truly enjoyed all of the well-mannered children and we want to thank all the teachers who allowed us the brief interruption of their classes.

"LEVEL OF PROFESSIONALISM"

Greetings from Sunny Arizona, USA!! As I write this article for PAIDE, it's about 7pm and 110 degrees outside! My mind wanders and I can't help but think how cooool it must be there in Manila....at the SM Mall! HA!

Every now and then I am asked what I do for a living. "Oh..." I reply, "I work as an interpreter for the Deaf." And usually I would wait for the questions with a pensive face;

"AS PROFESSIONAL INTERPRETERS"

Greetings, from across the pacific, to my fellow Interpreters (and aspiring Interpreters)!

In this issue, I will address the importance of honing one's craft, that is, your skills in sign language interpreting. This can be divided into three parts; Continued Education, attending seminars/workshops and immersion within the Deaf community.

As we all progress within our profession it is always important to keep learning and growing. Sign Language Interpreters are among the smartest and well-rounded folks out there.

What other profession can a person be in a TV station in the morning, a staff meeting in an electronics manufacturing plant at midday, field training for a new product by afternoon and in a surgery center by late afternoon? Interpreting offers us the door and insight to many locations and professions that are unseen by the general public. It is an honor and privilege to be given the access and the trust to behind the scenes of so many venues.
